Visual Direction Explorations for “Beyond the Horizon”

As part of the visual identity exploration for TEDxEindhoven 2025, I was brought on board to help develop early-stage visual directions. The goal: to create a distinct yet familiar look that aligns with TEDx’s existing design system while standing apart as a fresh start to a new event year.

Research & Foundation

Before sketching any ideas, I dove into the archive of TEDxEindhoven’s past visual identities—analyzing what worked, what felt timeless, and where there was room for evolution. The idea was to stay within the recognizable "family" of TEDx visuals but bring a noticeable shift that marks the beginning of a new chapter.

Round 1: Design visualization

Focused on broad interpretations—cosmic landscapes, abstract gradients, and type-led systems.

Round 2

Informed by the feedback, I developed a second round of three updated directions, all branching from the favored concept in Round 1. These refined designs included:

  • Iconic Eindhoven landmarks, like the Evoluon and Blob, embedded into the visuals.

  • Visual continuity through consistent layout structures and dynamic yet minimal compositions.

  • More defined usage examples, making it easier for the team to imagine the identity in use across posters, social media, and stage visuals.

Final Direction & Execution

The chosen visual language draws from a classic sea horizon theme — graphic waveforms built with bold gradients and a sun rising over the city of Eindhoven. The skyline highlights key landmarks, most notably the Evoluon, the venue of TEDxEindhoven 2025.

This direction offered a grounded yet imaginative response to the theme “Beyond the Horizon” — symbolizing a journey forward while rooting the event in its home city.
